Ghost Kitchens

Buying your take away on line is not a new trend. However in recent years with the rise of Just eat, Deliveroo and Uber ghost kitchens are now being developed in various parts of the UK and around the globe. Some are operating out of car parks,  or local industrial units but in pre fab metal containers. Apparently these are kitted out with commercial type catering equipment.

Well you maybe thinking  that all this make perfect economic sense, especially with the rising cost of commercial rents, building maintenance  and ongoing staffing costs. These units are totally mobile so you’re not restricted to a set area.  If pitched in the right location e.g. next to office complex or industrial estate then can be very profitable.

Could it be a winner or are there problems ahead?

There is still a need to comply with various safety laws in respect of food safety and workers safety. Not to mention possible pollution issues e.g. smell, noise and waste.

How will all this be dealt with. Councils are now having to find and inspect these units at a time when their resources are being restricted.

Even the companies setting up these units are now thinking ahead of likely issues and are having to put in place necessary safety, hygiene pollution control measures.

Local food businesses have also been slightly worried by the whole shift. Some have reported a drop in take away orders.

Who’s making my food?

But what about the really dark side. Do we really know who is producing all the food that is available to purchase online and where? What if the unit does not register with the Council. It will not get inspected.

It’s no secret for those in the know, i.e. EHO’s past and present that not all food businesses are run from a strictly commercial premises. Home catering has always been around and there are specific laws covering their food safety. However this relies on the caterer registering with the Council or where a complaint arises from a neighbour, due to smell or noise issue or an investigation into a food complaint.  The inspector would then vsit and assess safety.

When ordering on line a few checks can be done:

  • Check if the business has a food hygiene rating: remember 4 and 5 ratings are good.
  • Check other on line reviews of the food provider
  • If possible use a name that you recognise or local business in know of in your area
