Why do I need to know about this?

The law requires you to manage the way you make food so that it is safe for your customers. This is a brief overview of what this mean in reality.

Some questions for you to begin with:

You can ask yourself these questions.

  • Can the food I handle make anyone sick?
  • How can I prevent this?
  • Are my staff trained to prevent this happening?
  • Am I trained as the owner/ manager?
  • Who is responsible?
  • How can I prove I’m doing things correctly, do I have any paperwork?

ALL food businesses, whether you are a small grocery shop selling pre- packed food, children’s nursery, hospital or an event caterer or manufacturer need to be able to answer these questions in full.

Sometimes your own ideas  about what is safe is not necessarily correct. It is entirely likely that you have forgot to control a crucial step that that stops your customers getting ill.

This whole process is a strict legal requirement.

Is it complex and time consuming

This depends on the type and size of your food business, e.g. a food manufacturer will need to think about more things and have more paperwork than a small take away.

Does it affect my Food Hygiene Rating Score

Yes it does, and in a big way too. Again, many businesses are not fully aware of how the scoring systems works.

Visit can be as short as a couple of hours obviously depending on your size. You’ll get a brief report on the same day.
